Parts of an Airplane

Let’s say you are a bush pilot who has crashed in a remote place. You are miles way from any sort of settlement. The airplane is damaged somehow,and can’t fly.

You might successfully repair this damage. Doing so will allow you to return to civilization. However, you must understand airplane construction to accomplish this. A good bush pilot will be familiar with all of this.

There are few pilots who are ever faced with this sort of challenge. Very few pilots do the repairs or maintenance on their aircraft and few build them. Regardless, it is important to all pilots to understand the basic structure of an aircraft.

A bush pilot needs to understand the role of each airplane component. It is critical to understand the limitations of each part. The rate at which they deteriorate is also critical.

First, an airplane is a power driven, heavier than air machine. It derives its lift from aerodynamic reactions upon fixed surfaces. The term “airplane” and “aeroplane” are basically interchangeable.

There are many ways to classify fixed wing airplanes. You can count the number of wings. You can describe where the wings attach. You can describe the landing gear configuration. You can describe it based on the number of engines.

It can be a low wing or a high wing aeroplane. It can be multi-engine or single engine. It can be tricycle gear, conventional gear, seaplane or ski-plane. It can be called a monoplane, a biplane or a triplane.

Airplanes have 5 main parts to the structure. There is the body, usually called the fuselage. There are the wings, which are the lifting surfaces. There is the tail often called the empenage. There is the power plant, or engine or propulsion system. Last comes the landing gear configuration.

The entire structure is called the airframe. This includes fuel lines and fuel tanks. It does not include the wiring. It does not include the engine. Therefore, it includes the fuselage, the landing gear, the wings and tail assembly.

This is the most basic breakdown of an aircraft. It is more complex than this in reality. As a bush pilot you have to know this intimately.
