I am facing more than 12 hours of flying time. A whole day stuck in coach. Then the same dreadful time flying home. My poor body. This vacation could leave me more exhausted than before it began.

Do we have a choice? Stay home, but that’s boring. Buy a cushier seat in the Business or First Class cabins? Have you checked prices lately? No way, unless you’re rich or on an expense account.

But there’s hope. Have you tried Premium Economy yet?

Premium Economy seats are being sold on long-haul flights by more airlines every year. On the largest jetliners they’re a fourth class, in addition to traditional First, Business and Economy.

Cathay Pacific, for example, will begin offering the Premium Economy option in 2012. Cathay’s CEO announced the decision by saying it’s becoming a “standard product everywhere.”

Yet for many Americans, this trend may have gone unnoticed. Delta Airlines was the first U.S. airline to offer it, in 2010. It’s expected that other U.S. carriers will follow suit soon.

So, what’s the big deal about Premium Economy? Where to begin? Typically, Premium Economy passengers have their own check-in counter and can use the expedited security lines. But the best reason to consider this option is the “C” word: COMFORT. We’re talking a wider seat with more legroom, often 6 or 7 inches more than in coach, that you can push back to relax or sleep. Also adjustable headrests, leg rests and lumbar support.

Premium Economy has its own cabin that is small, separate and quiet. Other perks often include upgraded meal service and free alcoholic drinks, better entertainment choices and laptop power ports.

The downside? Premium Economy costs more (surprise, surprise). The question becomes, is the added fare worth it?

It depends. The price of these seats varies widely by airline, and in response to the demand for each flight. One example. Tickets on an Air New Zealand flight departing in late January 2012 from Auckland to Los Angeles cost as follows: Coach-$759; Premium Economy-$1,324; Business Class-$2,783.

Sometimes, Premium Economy seats cost little more than coach. If you can, adjust your travel dates to get these least expensive fares. Airlines often offer unsold Premium Economy seats at check-in at reduced rates. Ask!

Your frequent flier miles can often land you a seat, too. Fewer passengers compete for these less-well-known seats compared to Business Class. Try for a free seat or use your miles to upgrade a paid coach ticket.

So is Premium Economy the real deal? “If you are used to traveling Business Class and you fly Premium Economy, you will be disappointed,” says Matt Bennett, publisher of the online newsletter First Class Flyer. “If you’ve usually flown coach, do your homework before getting the ticket to have a much better experience at a reasonable price. You’ll never want to fly coach again.”
